In western Europe environmental management is now high on the agendas on most countries. Mountain Environments is based in Scotland which occupies a unique geographical position in Europe. The mixed maritime, continental and polar climate results in a very changeable weather patterns which interacts with the topography to create spectacular scenery with the mountains, lochs, glens and rivers. Water resources management is essential to ensure supplies to the many users while conserving river flows for aquatic environments. Sustainable flood management is developing, impacts of land us change is becoming better understood and the protection of the environment and rural communities is being carried out through the introduction of National Parks.
